Brian Ellis, phD
Founder and CEO
Brian is a seasoned aviation professional with over 23 years of experience as a UH-60 and MH-60M Black Hawk pilot. A retired Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5) and Master Army Aviator, he served in the U.S. Army as an instructor pilot, instrument flight examiner, and maintenance test pilot, with combat deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Turkey. He also performed disaster relief efforts along the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of hurricane’s Katrina and Rita. As a member of the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), he specialized in long range, precision rotary wing assaults. During his time as a conventional force aviator, he performed the aeromedical evacuation, VIP transport, air assault, and special operations missions.
Brian holds a Ph.D. in Higher Educational Leadership from TUI, an M.A. in Aviation Education, and a B.S. in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He also holds an FAA Airline Transport Pilot-Helicopter and Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument, an NVG Instructor endorsement and an SUAS Remote Pilot certificate. His PhD. research explored the Dunning-Kruger Effect in Aviators and its Correlation with Flying Hour Experience.
After retiring from the US Army, Brian worked as a management consultant advising middle market manufacturers how to optimize all aspects of their business to propel his clients to a place of global competitiveness.
Beyond his professional achievements, Brian mentors the next generation of aviators, coaching pilots on mental performance and confidence in aviation. He lives in Southeastern Michigan with his wife, Beth who is also a former Black Hawk pilot, and their two young children.
Brian founded 12 Block Solutions to provide facility stakeholders with the same disciplined assessment, risk management, and decision-making approach developed over more than two decades in military aviation. Today, the company helps organizations better understand asset condition and reduce uncertainty before making significant maintenance and capital planning decisions.
